One of the book discussions I remember the most took place during a class in my freshman year of college. A student remarked on the lack of emotion the author was showing concerning her mother’s death.

The comment struck a chord inside of me, and I remember the feeling of shock and indignation. “Just because the author isn’t crying doesn’t mean she doesn’t care. She wrote and illustrated an entire book and dedicated it to her mother,” I said.

Maybe it was me identifying with the author as a fellow woman who didn’t express her affections through tears, but through writing.

(I think dedicating a piece of writing to someone is the most beautiful gift you can give.)

This was one story I told you, as well as the story of the time a friend of a boy I was dating told me, “He thinks you don’t care about him.”

“Please don’t ever think that I don’t care about you,” I told you after I laid out these stories. “I really do. I’m just not good at showing it.” I don’t like tears, or jumping up and down for joy, or gazing deeply into someone’s eyes while confessing my emotions, pet names like “babe” or “hun” - to me, those actions were so forced, unnatural.

You took my hand and said that I didn’t need to worry. You understood my quirks, knew that texting you the random, nonsense things on my mind and leaving you smiley faces on Post-Its and filling up your empty water jug was my way of showing that I cared.

You made something so difficult for me so effortless.
